Local events

Food Bank Collection – Unfortunately, we were unable to undertake our regular collection on the 29^th June but will be back at the end of July.

I volunteered at Moseley in Bloom’s Open Gardens last weekend and got chance to look around a few of the wonderful gardens across Moseley. The Open Gardens is an important annual event as all of the money raised goes towards the cost of the fabulous florals that have been recently delivered.

I chaired our local ward meeting on the 20^th June where we were due to hear from our new Neighbourhood Police Sergeant, Sgt Louise Nicholls. Unfortunately, Sgt Nicholls couldn’t make it and we heard PCSO Giovanni Esposito about local policing issues. He listened to a range of concerns that he said he would take back to Sgt Nicholls. We also discussed the ward plan and agreed to review this at the next meeting. 

 

Installation of infrastructure for high speed broadband

 

I’m really pleased to see the much-awaited works started to develop the infrastructure for full fibre broadband in parts of Moseley that are currently a ‘notspot’. Unfortunately, some early promised engagement with residents was not undertaken and I met with a representative from BRSK to discuss concerns raised with me. The majority of concerns related to the siting of wooden poles which have sprung up in Wake Green Road, Reddings Road, Amesbury Road, Moor Green Lane, Trafalgar Road and Salisbury Road.  The poles are being installed in places where underground ducting is not suitable, and despite there being no requirement for planning permission, even in conservation areas, I am pleased to say there is now a commitment to fully engage with residents before any further poles are installed.

 

Advice surgeries

I hold a general advice surgery on the fourth Thursday of the month from 6-7pm at the Moseley Exchange, no appointment necessary. At the busy session last week I met with residents raising a range of issues with me. I’m pleased to say that all but one have already been resolved. My SEND surgery is held on the first Thursday from 5-7pm by appointment only at the Hive. You can make an appointment here – but please note that due to the General Election there will be no surgery on the 4^th July.

 

Casework and other updates

I make regular ward walkabouts and have unfortunately found lots more flytipping to report over the last month. It is such a shame to see our community blighted by such irresponsible behaviour.

I have reported a number of fridge-freezers and have been told it could take up to a month before they are removed. Please help spread the word and if you see a neighbour put out a fridge or fridge-freezer for the ‘scrap’ then let them know that they need to take it to the Tyseley recycling site for free disposal. If you spot flytipping you can report it either via the council website here – or through Fix My Street.

I reported a number of abandoned or overflowing bins and am grateful for the fast response received from the Atlas depot manager who took action to get these issues addressed quickly.

Following the prompt action by BT I have reported another phone box on Cambridge Road that is in need of some TLC. Let’s hope that can be sorted quickly.

 

Council Meetings

Education, Children and Young People O&S Committee

The Scrutiny Committee met for its first meeting of the municipal year and set its work programme for the coming 12 months.  The formal part of the meeting was followed by a visit to the Kings Campus of the City of Birmingham School where it was a privilege to meet an inspirational headteacher, Deputy head and Chair of the governing board as well as an opportunity to hear from some young people excluded from mainstream school. 

Full Council

We had a meeting of the full council on the 18^th June under the chairmanship of the new Lord Mayor Councillor Ken Wood at which I seconded the business report from the Co-ordinating Scrutiny which can be viewed here – https://birmingham.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/883225/start_time/10293000?force_language_code=en_GB

I was also pleased to attend the Brum Rise Up Rally prior to the council meeting and spoke to parent/carers about their concerns regarding the provision of school transport for their SEND children. I will be raising these issues with the Cabinet member and the Director of Children’s Services.

General election

I am still out knocking doors and talking to residents about the issues that matter to them and the difference a Labour government will bring. After 14 years it really is time for change.
